Grady Is Freed

As it relates to the public face of my words, my inclination towards constant, perhaps fitful, creation is probably established by now. I enjoy tinkering with themes. This enjoyment is akin to the one derived by people who knit, complete puzzles or finish crosswords, for three examples. It’s a hobby I suppose. You won’t ever hear me declare myself an accomplish theme-smith. It’s just fun to get lost in fonts, and colors, and code, and lost is somewhere I’ll often remain. Actually not a bad place to be from time to time.
In any event, the theme I’m currently sporting is available to for download and sport. Take it, modify it, print it up and use it for cat litter. Really, do whatever you’d like with it. Grady has now been released from the bounds of personal servitude, as I think all themes should be eventually. No sense allowing them to hole up in some dank corner gathering dusting and resentment. Themes are needy creatures and sulk when not allowed the choice of connection.

A Few Details
- Grady is a Wordpress 2.x theme released under a GLP license.
- Grady’s code validates out of the box. I can’t guarantee it will once you activate the theme because I don’t know if you’ve been letting your code guzzle whiskey and snort coke.
- It works great on the seven major Mac browsers I have vying for my attention. Windows and Internet Explorer is another story. I don’t have access to IE. However, I thought it due diligence to at least run it through the available IE-ification tools out there. Grady appears to render fine in IE6 & 7 when thrown into the clutches of IE Netrender and Browsershots, but keep in mind it has not been rung dry through Internet Explorer. Screenshots often tell lies. I’ll be keen to know the verdict from Windows users.
- Grady’s sidebar is widget enabled. I never use widgets so let me know if any of the styling could use a booster shot. I gave them a brief test, but it’s natural to ignore what we don’t use. I only care about widgets because you might.
- Lightbox is baked into Grady (see resources below).
Grady plays nice with the following plugins.
- Ultimate Tag Warrior
- Get Recent Comments
- Extended Live Archives
- Twitter Tools
- Flickrrss
- Post Updated
- Gravatar
Resources and Credits
Like the majority of the themes you can download here, I’ve made use of the following resources. Please, pay these talented and generous folks a visit. Typically these aren’t the only resources they offer, aside from the gift of themselves. Grady uses:
- a slightly modified version of Christian Montoya’s great comment template which is available for all at this link.
- the Cutline navigation template, a great theme if there ever was one.
- an XHTML site map template made possible because of Chris Pearson’s generous work.
- Christophe Beyls’ Slimbox, a visual clone of Lokesh Dhakar’s original Lightbox work, written using the ultra compact mootools framework.

Great looking theme. Clean.
July 25th 2007 - 12:57amThanks G. I appreciate the nice words and your taking the time to drop a comment.
And for anyone else who may be inclined please don’t hesitate to let lose suggestions, concerns, issues, or plain old loving appreciation concerning Grady.
July 25th 2007 - 8:26amI was in the process of changing the yellows to blue and making it a bit darker and you release Joshua.
August 16th 2007 - 5:49amthanks!
Serendipity is good like that G. Glad you liked it. I’ll have to stop by to see what it looks like live. And if you have any questions just let me know. There’s styling in Joshua for links and quotes and whatnot. If you’re comfortable enough with mucking through code you should be able to figure it out. Thanks for stopping by again G.
August 17th 2007 - 9:40pmYou are the man! You’ve made some pretty awesome themes I must say, thanks for releasing them to the community.
I’m currently using Grady on my blog, but I was wondering how I get Asides to show just like you have? The first post on my side is posted in the asides category, but it looks normal. Do I need to do something besides that?
August 27th 2007 - 11:52amAppreciate the nice words Zaipe. Always nice to drop into your webicle and see some love.
As for the asides, have you changed the category id number in the index file to reflect your asides category? That would be the first step in figuring it out. If you haven’t done this open up Grady’s index.php file. Look to line #19, or around there, and you’ll notice this line of code: php if ( in_category(999) && !is_single() ) : ?. You need to change the number 999, or whatever it is, to your Asides category id #.
If you’ve already done this, then let me know and we’ll try something else, but that’s the first de-bugging step.
August 27th 2007 - 12:06pmWell that solved it, so thanks.
I have noticed a few other things though:
1. When you are logged in, shouldn’t the “Who are you”, name and website form disappear? Maybe it’s just me?
2. Ok, these are minor errors, but still. Check out this post: http://blog.orgday.org/2007/08/25/the-average-american-male/
August 27th 2007 - 2:37pmHow do I remove the space between “Noteworthy” and “category”? Also is there a way to add an “and” between the last two tags?
Great looking theme. It’s a great base for what I want to do with a layout. Thanks!
August 28th 2007 - 12:12am@Lucas: Thanks Lucas, and I think you’re right. The more I look at Grady the more I see it as a good base theme, or there’s a lot of possibilities to make it something new and you. Appreciate you dropping a comment.
@Zaipe: Okay, so let’s see if I can address some of these.
(1) The honest answer is I don’t know. Is it supposed to disappear? I mean it’s doing what it’s supposed to do given the code, but the code could be wrong, like wrong in not secure or not standard. Do forms disappear in other themes?
(2) To add a space between the category names (it should be there so thanks for pointing it out) open up your header.php file and around line #29 you will notice this code It’s been filed in the < ?php the_category('+') ?>category…. You want to make sure there’s a space between the “>” and the word category. That’s one way of doing it.
(3) That’s always bugged me as well, but I let it go. I was under the impression that the “tagsetcommalist” function would add an “and” to the last tag. It never has for me, and I never pursued an answer, other than a quick dip into the UTW forums. In other words, I don’t know how to do that. Sorry zaipe.
One out of three ain’t bad huh? And don’t work about these questions seeming minor. They’re important to you, and I’m happy to help to the best of my ability so keep them coming if you’d like.
August 28th 2007 - 8:28amThank you for getting back to me.
Well yeah it usually does disappear, but honestly it doesn’t really bother me, I was just wondering if you had some kind of purpose it this way, but don’t worry about it.
Thanks, that fixed it! I just couldn’t find the exact place in the code.
I think you are right. You’re just calling the tagsetcommalist and the rest is basically up to UTW. Hmm I’ll try Google or something.
Yeah I guess these “issues” kinda are important to me, so thanks for trying. I really am a perfectionist.
August 28th 2007 - 12:41pmThanks so much for the theme, clear, simple and minimal, that’s what I’m really looking for.
I however have a problem running the theme. My blog is blank showing nothing when I activated the theme. I’m sure all files are located at the proper directory.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!
September 1st 2007 - 2:25amOh, I just found out that it’s probably the problem of my host, as I could get it to work properly with another host. Sorry about that.
I however have another problem concerning your another dark theme, Joshua. Sorry to post it here as I can’t find another place to ask. It seems that the theme doesn’t work with the plugin WP AJAX Edit Comment. Sorry to bother you so much. Thank you!
September 1st 2007 - 3:11amSorry… again, the problem of the plugin is related to my host only… Thanks anyway for your great themes!
September 1st 2007 - 7:41amAlfred - I appreciate the comments, and am always tickled when someone drops in with a theme bug but proceeds to figure the whole thing out on their own :). So no need to apologize, I’m glad you put down a comment looking for help. Let me know if you have any other issues. I’ll do my best to lend a hand.
September 3rd 2007 - 7:49amThank you so much Amos! I’m really happy to see that such a themer like you still exist in the Wordpress community. You’re the most helpful and kindest themer I have ever met on the Internet, trust me! I’m really glad you’re so nice to help others. So I won’t hesitate anymore to raise questions about anything, but bear me that as I know little about codes. Thank you!
September 3rd 2007 - 9:28amYou’re very kind to say so Alfred. Thank you. And no need to worry about knowing little code. It’s all relative. I know more than some, and a ton less than a lot of others so don’t be nervous to speak up if you need any guidance. I’ll do my best with the little knowledge I have. I happen to be of the opinion that there’s a community of Wordpress users out there and you share whatever you can with them; your time, knowledge, work, whatever it may be.
September 3rd 2007 - 10:39amI’m touched Amos, let’s make friend! :] I’m sorry if these off topics cause any inconvenience for you…
September 3rd 2007 - 11:06amHey, awesome theme. Thanks for making it.
September 23rd 2007 - 10:41amHello. It seems that your download links are not working. I would’ve very much loved to have downloaded this theme.
December 13th 2007 - 7:27amAnd by the way, this is by far my favorite theme out of all the hundreds I’ve seen so far.
December 13th 2007 - 7:32amBrain - Check your email. I sent you a copy. I’ll look into the problem, and thanks for the kind words about the theme.
And thank you as well Keifer.
December 13th 2007 - 11:38amThank you for the copy.
I was able to download the file after refreshing the page, but when I initially click it no file opens up.
