The Wasteful Effort

Published May 5th, 2008

I’m out on the boathouse deck this morning. Wiping off layers of grime and pollen from items concerned little one way or the other. An Adirondack chair cares nothing of a fresh coat of yellow dust. It’s a chair. It knows itself regardless of the changing seasons.

I stopped wiping off the grime and pollen. Because it does not matter. It’ll go away in time despite my lack of effort. And this is the lesson for the morning. My lesson. Just let it be. I keep reminding myself. Let it be. The effort is often a distration from noticing the wonders around us. Like the Geese are back, with their fuzzy treasures, which I would have missed had I not taken a quiet moment to sit in this dirty Adirondack chair and observe whatever happened to come my way.
